Steve Themis Catafygiotu, 95, died peacefully on November 18, 2019. He was born May 20, 1924 in Fredericksburg, VA, the son of Greek immigrants. Steve was a graduate of Virginia Tech and took great pride of his military service where he was a Flight Engineer on B-24 Bombers for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a long time resident of Smithfield, NC and owned Smithfield TV & Music Center. Steve was well known for his love of playing his trumpet in local jazz bands and over the decades he could be found jogging through south Smithfield. At the age of 87 Steve made four large stain glass windows for a church in Florida.
Steve especially loved his grandchildren, animals and helping others.He is survived by his sons, Tom and his wife Mary Ann and John and his wife Terri; and his daughter Stephanie and her husband Joe. Steve is also survived by his seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his lovely wife Lucia, and siblings John and Eva.
There will be a private gathering on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at his daughter’s home in Raleigh, NC for family and friends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate in Steve’s honor to your local animal shelter or to PruittHealth Hospice.
