John Theodore Alter (b. Jan. 21, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio) passed away, at his home in Pinehurst, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, with his family at his bedside.

John attended Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in marketing and finance. He worked 30 years for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company as a division manager and vice president of marketing, until his retirement in 1991. He then worked for United Way until relocating from Toledo to Pinehurst, in 1998.

John enjoyed golf and power boating his entire life. He was actively involved with United States Power Squadrons (now America’s Boating Club) for over 50 years, serving as squadron and district commander in both Toledo and Rocky River, Ohio.  John was elected chief commander of United States Power Squadrons during their 100th anniversary year in 2012-2013. He and his wife, Judy, enjoyed traveling the United States promoting the safe boating concepts espoused by USPS and socializing with countless friends and associates within the boating community.

In Pinehurst, John worked with the Center for Creative Retirement, assisting with construction of the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center and promoting senior services. He also worked as a ranger for a number of Pinehurst golf courses and at the ABC stores in Pinehurst and Carthage.

John was on the board of directors/finance committee for several years at Pinehurst Trace, where he and Judy resided.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy; four children, Anne Danos (Perry), Kristin Alter, John Jr. (Jennifer) and Jeanne Danos (Demetri); 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
