John Keso Obituary

John Reed Keso, 87, passed away on August 4, 2024 in Fayetteville, NC. Born on April 16, 1937 in Fort Riley, KS, to the late M/SGT Reed Yeoman Keso (Ret) and Louese Julia Harrison Keso. He is also predeceased by his sister, Neola Francis Dodson and his beloved wife, Kikue (Katy) Moroyama Keso whom he was married to for 64 years.

John graduated high school at the age of 17 from St. John’s Military School in Salina, KS. Shortly after, John joined the US Army. He honorably served 22 years in the US Army from June 3, 1954 to July 31, 1976, before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. His military career included significant postings in Japan, Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Turkey. His military decorations include the Bronze Star (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster). After his military service, John transitioned to civilian life, electing to go back to school where he earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree from Campbell University. Utilizing these degrees, he contributed to the education sector in various capacities at Campbell University, the North Carolina State Approving Agency, Methodist University, Central Carolina Community College and Montgomery Community College.

John is survived by his nephew, Brent Dawson of Granbury, TX; his niece, Tammy Pursley of Ft. Worth, TX; and his lifelong friend, Suzy Hubbard and her three children, Larry Hubbard, Jon Hubbard, and Ada Hubbard.

John’s life will be celebrated and remembered for his service to his country and his commitment to education.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John R. Keso Scholarship Fund at Campbell University.

A Memorial Service will be held at Cumberland Memorial Gardens, 4509 Raeford Road, Fayetteville, NC on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 11:00am.
