Joseph John Mitchell, a proud Vietnam Veteran, passed away on March 30, 2022. Joe, as he was known to family and friends, was born on April 3, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA to James and Catherine (O’Donnell) Mitchell, grew up in Oaklyn, NJ and attended Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, NJ. Joe worked briefly in a machine shop before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served 18 years and was part of the Alpha Company 3rd Battalion 2nd STB.
The U.S. Army recognized Joe for his honorable service by awarding him with the Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
After his military career, Joe moved around the country until settling in Columbia, SC working as a maintenance manager for an apartment complex. Joe spent his final years in Fayetteville, NC at the North Carolina State Veteran’s Home. As a young boy, Joe was interested in military history and loved when family vacations included visits to military forts and battle sites. As an adult traveling around the country with a good camera and an old-school map, Joe often gave his passengers whiplash in his efforts to photograph every historical marker he came across.
Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Mitchell, and his parents. He is survived by his son, Chad Davis and his daughters Judy (Jim) Hughes, Kelly Holihan, Jamie (David) Gunsallus and Joedie Mitchell, as well as his three grandchildren, Kyle Holihan, Devin Holihan and Darby Hughes, his siblings, Bill (Dawn) Mitchell, Roe Miller, and Lori Mitchell. A memorial celebrating Joe’s life and military career is being planned for May.
